New Year, New You! - 5 secrets to keep your resolution
I Believe in New Year's Resolutions, from time immemorial we as humans have gathered together to watch the ball drop and make silent promises to ourselves to be better people this time around, dropping old habits and picking up new healthier ones. Sure it’s just a day like any other on the calendar if you let it be, but there is something magical about this ancient tradition, and it can change your life if you let it. So here are five ways to help you stay true to yourself and hedge your bets for a new year new you!
Be realistic with your goals- Don't bite off more than you can chew, of course, shoot for the moon but remember you are only human and there's no quicker way to fail a resolution than lying to yourself about your abilities, start small if you have to, you'll build momentum before you know it. Once you reach that first goal it will be like a domino effect.
Have an accountability buddy to shame you- pick someone you trust who you can trust to keep you in line and on track to achieve your goals, all the better if your buddy is also working on their resolution so you can shame each other into being the best version of yourselves!
Positive self-talk - as we well know everyone dies alone, you’re born alone you die alone, you're stuck with yourself! You can't have a negative attitude! So tell yourself how good you're doing and keep the encouragement coming. There's nothing wrong with a pep talk in the car before a long day at the funeral home, you’ve got this! 🧟♂️
Avoid toxic people- Misery loves company, when people who are suffering see you getting healthy they will want to surround you with negativity and cause you to backslide. So limit your time with bar flies you think are friends, I bet after you’ve had a few days with sober eyes you’ll see they weren't doing much for you anyway.
Stack your habits- I first heard about habit stacking in Atomic Habits by James Clear which is a fantastic book that lays out an easy and proven way to help you build good habits. “Habit Stacking” is where you pair a new habit with one that you already do, which will then increase the likelihood that you will follow through with the task. This process can be repeated to chain numerous habits together, each one acting as the cue for the next. For example; when you turn off your alarm in the morning take a moment to stretch before you start your day. After you finish your stretches, write out your to-do list for the day, and so on. Habit stacking helps you automate your habits and weed out no productive activities.
2023 is over & done, and there is no use dwelling on things you can’t change from the past, all we can do is use the blessing of free will to hedge our bets in favor of ourselves. I had my last drink on a New Year’s and never looked back! There's no better feeling than waking up without a hangover to start you off on the right foot, So use these five secrets and take the first step to a whole new happier, healthier, hangover-free version of yourself!
